Made my way to Puebla today. Really cute city, plus I like my hotel, despite the somewhat chemical smell in the room… Only bad thing is the air – it really is polluted here. Simply thanks to heavy traffic, old cars, and motors not turning off when the cars stand. Incredible. Funny it gets at my nerves here – much worse than DF.
Anyhow.
The best moment – when Ixtla turned up with its majestic mountain top behind a pile of clouds, much higher than I thought – my jaw literally dropped open.
Next best moment… When Popo turned up behind Ixtla. He’s on the left in the pic below and is bigger than Ixtla (on the right), just seems opposite due to the view from the north. And – I couldn’t believe it – Popo smokes. My first volcano. I find it incredible, mostly incredibly beautiful. Was quite sure, though, that on the taxi drive from the bus station to the hotel, I saw a glimpse of a bigger cloud that looked like a mushroom cloud…. Was gone lateron.
This post will not post anything about the town. I dedicate it to Popo and Ixtla. I chose the hotel yesterday cause I saw the pics on the internet of its roof terrace. I went up there for sunset, and was the only one. Can you believe that. Despite a lot of Mexican street sound, I meditated the „blue hour“ away until almost-dark.
And here is the old Aztec myth of Popo(catépetl) and Ixtla(ccíhuatl).
Popocatépetl was a warrior, while Ixtlaccíhuatl was the emperor’s daughter. Both fell in love with each other – a love that was to be everlasting.
Popocatépetl left for war and fought many a battle. When Ixtlaccíhuatl got news he had died, sorrow ate her up until she died. But Popocatépetl had not died… and he returned from war only to find the dead body of Ixtlaccíhuatl. He carried her deep into the mountains to mourn beside the body, lighting a torch. And he did not leave her side…
